AMs could be banned from employing family members as part of a new raft of measures in relation to AM support staff recommended by the Independent Remuneration Panel and put out for consultation.
If the recommendations are approved, any family members employed as staff after 24th October 2018 will no longer be allowed to hold an Assembly-funded position as of 31st March 2019.
A complete ban on using public funds to employ family members – including those who are already employed – will be introduced for the Sixth Assembly (from April 2021). At the moment, 14 AMs are said to be employing family members as staff.
The Panel also recommended the introduction of privilege days and compassionate leave for AM support staff and matching pay increases using a similar mechanism to AMs.
