In a letter to the Economy & Infrastructure Committee (pdf), Chief Executive of Transport for Wales, James Price, confirmed that locomotive-hauled services will be temporarily introduced on the Rhymney Valley line in June 2019, as current trains are withdrawn one-by-one for refurbishment and upgrades.

The letter also confirmed that loco-hauled trains will continue to be used until the end of 2019, while refurbished Class 769 trains will be introduced on the Valley Lines from September 2019.

Brand new tri-mode (diesel, electric, battery) are expected to be introduced from 2023 as part of the Wales & Borders franchise agreement.
