On September 2nd, Tata announced that its Orb works in Newport – which makes steel for electrical equipment – would close following the failure to find a buyer. While BBC Wales reported that the workforce could be redeployed to other steelworks, up to 380 jobs could be lost from the site. Tata blamed competition from China for the decision.
While the Welsh Government opened talks with the company, Plaid Cymru called for the Orb plant to be nationalised due to the strategic importance the steel it produces would have for the electric vehicle and renewable energy industries.
The same day, 130 job losses were announced at the We Fight Any Claim call centre in Cwmbran, said to be due to the deadline for people to claim compensation for being mis-sold PPI insurance passing. Managers pledged to provide support to affected workers.
