The Leader of the Opposition in the Senedd, Paul Davies AM (Con, Preseli Pembs.), hold his party’s autumn conference in Birmingham that an early Welsh General Election should be held as soon as a successor to Carwyn Jones is elected.

He said the incoming Labour leader would lack a mandate and the number of leadership changes in all of the parties in Wales during 2018 warrants an early election. He appealed to Plaid Cymru to work in their common interest to deliver the “change Wales needs”.

The move would require two thirds of AMs to vote in favour of an election and while Plaid Cymru – under new leader, Adam Price AM (Plaid, Carms. E & Dinefwr) – said while they were “ready” for an early election, “This is really just a transparent attempt to deflect attention away from the Conservative party’s catastrophic handling of Brexit. So divided is the Tory party, it might not even exist by the time a Welsh election is called.”

The next Welsh General Election isn’t scheduled to take place until May 2021.
