This is an article I think everyone involved in and watching Welsh politics hoped they would never have had to write or read.
The news broke within the last hour or so that the Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales East, Steffan Lewis, has lost his fight with bowel cancer at the age of just 34.
Even when he was facing some of the darkest moments any person could face – in any walk of life let alone in a public role – he did his duty without complaint, without seeking pity and whilst doing his damnedest to ensure Wales rides out Brexit and emerges the other side in good shape.
Even when facing the prospect of death, he wanted to do right by Wales, fighting serious illness with quiet dignity.
That’s a testament to the man’s character, the inner strength that he perhaps didn’t even know he had, as well as and the love and support of those around him – friends, family, in Plaid Cymru and colleagues from every part of the Senedd.
You’re going to hear and see this a lot, but Wales really has lost one of our brightest political talents, someone who was wise beyond their years and, even in the short time he had as an AM, took to what is an incredibly difficult role like a natural. I’m in no doubt it would’ve one day led him to the top in some way, shape or form, but that’s been cruelly cut short.
My own, and I’m sure everyone’s, thoughts right now are with his family and friends.
Gorffwys mewn hedd, Steffan.
