Campaigners calling for the UK Government to reform the mineworkers’ pension scheme have taken their protest to London following a brief stop at the Senedd last week.
At the moment, the UK Government takes around half of the surplus in the pension scheme as part of an agreement by the UK Government to guarantee the pension scheme following privatisation of the coal industry in the 1990s. It’s estimated this has resulted in £4.4billion being taken out of the scheme.
The cause was taken up by the late Plaid Cymru AM, Steffan Lewis, and has since been taken up by his Plaid Cymru colleagues in the Senedd and at Westminster.
Campaigners had collected 100,000 signatures for a petition demanding reforms.
