A new YouGov poll – where people were asked to rank their favourability towards Welsh independence on a scale of 1-10 – has revealed a general increase in the proportion of people who are favourable towards or outright support independence.
36% of people polled were either strongly or moderately supportive of independence (6-10), while 47% were mildly or strongly against (0-4). 17% were in the middle (5) – often dubbed “indycurious”.
The figures compared to 29% favourable and 53% unfavourable from a similar poll conducted in 2017. Also, there were more Labour supporters in the favourable category (40%) than unfavourable (28%).
It comes just a week after former First Minister, Carwyn Jones AM (Lab, Bridgend), admitted that people within the Labour party were open towards independence in a way that hadn’t happened before. He’s due to take part in a discussion hosted by pro-independence pressure group, Yes Cymru, at the 2019 National Eisteddfod.
