Politicians and parents caught up in the Cwm Taf maternity scandal alike have called for a criminal investigation into the circumstances which lead to maternity services being placed into special measures during 2019.
BBC Wales Investigates broadcast testimony from families whose children received poor care at the health board. 140 historic cases of poor care – some of which resulted in children dying or being left with disabilities – are being reviewed.
The head of the Royal College of Midwives in Wales, Helen Rogers, told the programme that staff were afraid to raise concerns due to fears of being “punished”.
Health Minister, Vaughan Gething (Lab, Cardiff S. & Penarth) – who survived a no-confidence vote last year triggered by the scandal – accepted he wasn’t given the full picture of what was happening at the time.
Leader of Labour-run Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, Cllr. Andrew Morgan, joined calls for a criminal investigation. He said: “If it’s established that harm did come to individuals through neglect or because people knew of the risks and didn’t act, then potentially they should face further action through the courts.”
