On 8th August, NHS staff from across the UK took part in protests calling for a pay rise for nurses and other frontline healthcare workers after they were excluded from a new deal.
A rally took place outside the Senedd, while protests also took place in Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil and Bridgend. The Welsh Government – which is responsible for NHS pay – granted a 2.8% pay rise for doctors and dentists but no equivalent for nurses, care workers and other staff.
Protestors argued the spirit of the weekly applause for the NHS and care workers during the peak of the pandemic wasn’t being matched with deeds.
The Welsh Government said: “The current multi-year pay deal for nurses is set to end in March 2021 and we are working with our NHS union and employer partners to ensure the best possible reward packages for all health workers through the independent public pay review process.”
