The leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, Cllr. Andrew Morgan, has said Wales has to spend up at least £500million on flood prevention measures to ensure the country avoids emergencies such as those caused by Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis earlier in 2020.
RCT council – which was particularly hard-hit by the storms – has estimated the clean-up operation will cost at least £80million.
Cllr. Morgan told BBC Wales: “Clearly climate change is happening – it’s here and now – therefore we are going to have to continue the significant investment that’s going in, and I think it’s probably going to have to be accelerated again in the coming years.”
The Welsh Government said it has provided millions of pounds in emergency flood grants and additional support to councils and Natural Resources Wales to bring forward new flood protection schemes.
