With under 50 days to go until the UK leaves the Brexit transition period, Counsel General & Brexit Minister, Jeremy Miles (Lab, Neath), has warned businesses and the public alike that there will be major changes – regardless of whether a last-minute deal is agreed, or the UK leaves the transition period without a deal with the EU.
The Welsh Government has prepared an End of Transition Period Plan (pdf) to highlight some of the areas where uncertainty remains, including access and use of personal data (for law enforcement), the continued flow of critical goods (such as medical supplies and food) and possible delays at border crossings.
The Counsel General criticised the UK Government’s decision not to seek an extension to the Brexit transition period, in which EU rules continued to be applied in the UK following the UK official departure from the EU on 31st January 2020.
The Counsel General said: “In preparing for end of transition, we have continued to act in the best interests of our nation; working with local partners, businesses and communities across Wales to support them as they get ready for what comes next. There is uncertainty and a degree of anxiety about the next stage, but I want to reassure people in Wales that the Welsh Government continues to do all we can to help you through the changes that are coming.”
