How are votes tracked and recorded?

Voting records are included on the pages for Issues, Members of the Senedd and the political parties.

Each voting record contains the following information:

  • The date the vote took place.
  • The Motion Number which you can use at the Senedd website to get further information on the full wording of the motion, full wording of amendments and any other details.
  • Subject – What the vote was about. It’ll also be made clear if the vote is on an amendment to a motion.
  • Tabled – This tells you who tabled the vote. This could be a political party, a backbench Member’s debate, a Petitions Debate, a debate on a Committee report, a law-making stage, regulations (including Legislative Consent Motions, where the UK Parliament seeks permission to pass laws in devolved policy areas) or a procedural vote under the Senedd’s Standing Orders/rules.
  • Binding Vote? – This sets out whether this vote will result in a final decision (“Yes”) or just express the opinions of the Senedd (“No”). Government-tabled votes and votes related to laws and regulations are examples of binding votes.
  • Outcome – This notes the result of the vote. This will let you know if a party or MS was on the “winning” or “losing” side. It’ll usually be listed as either “AGREED” or “REJECTED”. “REJECTED (PO)” means a tied vote where the Llywydd or Deputy Llywydd has used their casting vote against the motion, as is tradition.

Member profile pages will also state if an MS failed to vote for whatever reason (listed as “Did Not Vote” on the official Senedd voting records).

Only contested votes will be listed on party and member profile pages.
