Jenny Rathbone AM has been suspended by the Labour Assembly group after being recorded making what are described as anti-Semitic comments and also posting on social media suggesting the Israeli Government were undermining Jeremy Corbyn.
The AM was recorded saying at an event in November 2017 to mark the Balfour Declaration – which eventually led to the creation of Israel – saying:
“The fact that the Jewish synagogue in Cyncoed is become one of these, you know, fortress is really uncomfortable.
“How much of it is for real and how much of it is in their own heads is really hard for an outsider to judge, but I think siege mentalities are also part of it.”
– Jenny Rathbone AM
She also suggested that a rise in anti-Semitism was due to hostility towards Israeli actions against the Palestinians.
Last week, the Leader of the House and Chief Whip said in the chamber that anti-Semitism was completely unacceptable.
Jenny Rathbone has also apologised to the Rabbi of Cyncoed Synagogue in person and referred herself to equalities training, but the issue has been referred to the Labour party.
