The Welsh Government’s public consultation on setting a minimum price for alcohol has backed their original intention of setting the price at 50p-per-unit.
The Senedd approved the Minimum Alcohol Price Act in June 2018 by 45 votes to 5. A similar law has already been introduced in Scotland.
“Taking into these consultation responses and other factors, we remain of the view of that a 50p minimum unit price is a proportionate response to tackling the health risks of excessive alcohol consumption – and that a 50p minimum unit price strikes a reasonable balance between the anticipated public health and social benefits and intervention in the market.”
– Health Minister, Vaughan Gething AM (Lab, Cardiff S. & Penarth)
Regulations setting the new minimum price will need the approval of AMs before coming into force.
