The coal-fired Aberthaw power station in the Vale of Glamorgan will close on 31st March 2020 after the owners, RWE, decided to bring forward the closure date blaming “market conditions”. Up to 170 jobs will be lost.
Since 2017 the plant had been kept as a reserve power station to produce energy during periods of peak demand, but the UK Government has committed to phasing out coal-fired power plants by 2025.
The plant was also found to be in breach of EU air pollution regulations in 2016.
