The leader of the UK Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey, has said the record of Education Minister, Kirsty Williams (Lib Dem, Brecon & Radnor) will help the party recover from the disappointment of losing five Senedd members in 2016.
Recent polling suggests the party have an uphill struggle to make any gains, while they lost their only MP in Wales at 2019’s UK General Election.
However, Ed Davey told BBC Wales ahead of the party’s virtual autumn conference that: “I think it’s by going back to what Liberal Democrats used to do, and what Liberal Democrats do at a local level very well – understanding what individual communities want and making sure we apply our values to their concerns so we’ve got solutions to their problems.”
He added that the Education Minister has delivered on Lib Dem values in government. The party has long championed the pupil premium for disadvantaged pupils, while the Minister is currently overseeing the introduction of a new national curriculum and has reformed student support.
