The First Minister told Labour’s virtual autumn conference that Labour in Wales needs to rebuild trust with the public ahead of next year’s Senedd election. He also suggested the party shouldn’t take any votes for granted.
He said: “On the road to 2021, we have to earn that trust again. To win every vote we are privileged to have cast for us. To show that their hardship and damage of coronavirus can still be a catalyst for profound and lasting change.”
While there were no major policy announcements, the UK’s Leader of the Opposition, Kier Starmer, seemingly contradicted the First Minister’s support for holding a second Scottish independence referendum by ruling it out. Plaid Cymru pounced on that, suggesting the Welsh branch of Labour were beholden to policy decided by the UK party.
The most recent Senedd election polling suggests Labour may lose seats but are still likely to remain the largest party after next May.
