“No further action” to be taken against prospective Plaid Cymru candidate over antisemitism

Plaid Cymru has said that no action will be taken against a prospective candidate who shared an antisemitic post on social media during the Black Lives Matter protests.

It was the second time that molecular geneticist, Sahar Al-Faifi – who’s currently seeking selection to the South Wales Central regional list for next year’s Senedd election – was deemed to have expressed antisemitic views.

After the first incident in 2019, she was temporarily suspended and sought advice from Jewish groups.

In the second incident, she linked police violence in the United States to Israel – implying an antisemitic trope that Jews influence world events – based on false claims attributed to an Amnesty International report, which also resulted in Labour’s Rebecca Long-Bailey being dismissed from the UK shadow cabinet.

There have been calls for the party leader, Adam Price MS (Plaid, Carms. E. & Dinefwr), to take firmer action after the Board of Deputies of British Jews accused the party of tolerating antisemitism.

Plaid Cymru said: “(the party) respects the views of the Board of Deputies and will continue to have constructive discussions. The party has a zero-tolerance approach to antisemitism and all forms of prejudice and discrimination.”
